Group Presentation

On thing that I have decided would be smart to focus on are cues to orient listeners. I don't know about anyone else but I have had to sit through many group presentations that are actually pretty dull. I think that if the presentation is set up in a way that the listeners remember what was said then the presentation was worth the effort. In the book on page 837 it states that to have the audience follow your presentation it is important to use four things;
- Thesis and forecasting statements
- Transitions
- summaries
- visuals
by focusing on these four things i have confidence any group presentation can become more put together, allowing others to listen and remember what has been said.

Working with others can be tough, a lot of the times I would just rather get it all done myself that way i would know that it would be finished by the deadline. But working with a group is very beneficial in many ways. One point from the book that i thought was good was establishing clear and easy means of communicating with one another, also spending time planning the project, both of these steps will make a better group project.

Prop Revision

Abortion(Proposition)
Think of a child in your life, maybe it’s a sibling, a niece, a nephew or even your own flesh and blood. Can you picture how your life would be if that child was gone? Many cringe just thinking about it but sadly hundreds of children die each day through a process called abortion. According to jstor.org access to legal abortion has been the subject of heated public debate in the United States for several decades, with both pro-choice and pro-life organizations waging media and lobby campaigns in their efforts to win a level of support. In 1997 45% of American public believed that abortion should be available to married women to no longer wanted children. This is not the case any longer, many believe that abortion should be available to all people; these people are also known as pro-choice believers.
Women are faced with many different situations, some may choose abortion because they were rapped, some because of health risks and others because of stupid decisions they have decided to make. No matter what that situation abortion is not the way, there is always another option, every child deserves to live. Many people think of this process as only a process, they do not realize that they are killing innocent children, therefore committing murder a horrible unjustly crime.
Over 60 percent of abortions are among women who have had 1 or more children. Trying to understand how these women can stand living with themselves is very difficult. They understand the process; they know what it’s like to hold that new infant in their arms, giving the baby all their love. Many cannot even start to comprehend the dangers that this horrible process can bring to the mother, some even deadly. Those dangers include; Bladder injury, bowl injury, breast cancer, ectopic pregnancy, effect on future pregnancy, failed abortion, infection, higher rate of miscarriages, severe rapid bleeding, sterility and many more. These are all very harmful to the body so the steps of an abortion should not be taken.
Everyday millions of women around the world are considering aborting their child because of a “mistake”. They think that if they do it early enough they are doing nothing wrong because it is not “alive”. However, the word alive means to grow, develop, mature, and replace its own dying cells. It means not being dead. Each child at the time of conception is living, each child should have a chance to live. The constitution states that all men are created equal, this accounts for all people even the people who have not had the chance to be born but was waiting for that time to come, they have a right to live.
Abortion is one of the most common medical procedures performed in the United States each year. More than 40% of all women will end a pregnancy by abortion at some time in their reproductive lives. While women of every social class seek terminations, the typical woman who ends her pregnancy is either young, white, unmarried, poor, or over the age of 40.In the United States and worldwide, abortion remains common.

Grammar Post

Throughout the entire semester we have learned how to write effectively, we have learned many ways of accomplishing this from our instructor but I thought it would be interesting to look into it a little further and see what some things others advise to become a more effective writer. At grammarbook.com I found a few really good tips;
Rule 1. Use concrete rather than vague language.
Examples: Vague: The weather was of an extreme nature on the west coast.
Concrete: California had very cold weather last week.

Rule 2. Use active voice whenever possible. Active voice means the subject is performing the verb.
Examples: Active: Barry hit the ball.
Passive: The ball was hit.
Notice that the responsible party may not even appear when using passive voice.

Rule 3. Avoid overusing there is, there are, it is, it was, and so on.
Example: There is a case of meningitis that was reported in the newspaper.
Correction: A case of meningitis was reported in the newspaper.
Even Better: The newspaper reported a case of meningitis. (Active voice)
Example: It is important to signal before making a left turn.
Correction: Signaling before making a left turn is important.
OR
Signaling before a left turn is important.

OR

You should signal before making a left turn. (Active voice)

Example: There are some revisions which must be made.
Correction: Some revisions must be made.
Even Better: Please make some revisions. (Active voice)

These are just a few of the great rules that I found on how to write effectively for more tips click the following link.

Problems with Prepositions

I have noticed that at times dealing with prepositions can be pretty tough and this web site has some great rules that really helped me.
Rule 2. Use on with expressions that indicate the time of an occurrence.
Examples: He was born on December 23.
We will arrive on the fourth.

Rule 3. 0f should never be used in place of have.
Correct: I should have done it.
Incorrect: I should of done it.

Rule 4. Between refers to two. Among is used for three or more.
Examples: Divide the candy between the two of you.
Divide the candy among the three of you.

110 in the Shade

I thought this play was done very well based on N. Richard Nash's 1954 American classic play "The Rainmaker." The students truly showed that they can act. In this play it mainly focuses on a small family that live in a small farming town where a huge drought is taking place. One hot day a man comes out of nowhere named Starbuck, he tells them that if they will pay him $100 in advance he will bring the rain. Throughout the entire play there is always this drama side of the family, they are trying to get Lizzie married off but she is too hard headed for most men in the town. They try to get her with the sheriff but he is still living in the past constantly thinking of his wife that left him for another man. When Starbuck comes to town he makes Lizzie feel beautiful, for the first time in her life she does. But later as Starbuck and the sheriff are fighting over her she realizes that Starbuck's head is full of dreams and no reality. So who will Lizzie choose? Starbuck the man who made her believe in herself or the sheriff and man still trying to get though the leaving of his wife? Well i guess you are going to have to go watch it to find out, overall I thought it was a very good play and the lead parts were done very well, if your in the mood for a play its a must see.

Nike "Just Do It"( Research Review )

I received a lot of great questions for my topic on Friday, my topic being Nike Shocks. One question that I would like to focus on is how Nike came up with their name and logo. I found a lot of great information.
NIKE, pronounced NI-KEY, is the winged goddess of victory according to Greek mythology. She sat at the side of Zeus, the ruler of the Olympic pantheon, in Olympus. A mystical presence, symbolizing victorious encounters, NIKE presided over history's earliest battlefields. A Greek would say, "When we go to battle and win, we say it is NIKE." Synonymous with honored conquest, NIKE is the twentieth century footwear that lifts the world's greatest athletes to new levels of mastery and achievement. The NIKE 'swoosh' embodies the spirit of the winged goddess who inspired the most courageous and chivalrous warriors at the dawn of civilization.
The SWOOSH logo is a graphic design created by Caroline Davidson in 1971. It represents the wing of the Greek Goddess NIKE. Caroline Davidson was a student at Portland State University in advertising. She met Phil Knight while he was teaching accounting classes and she started doing some freelance work for his company. Phil Knight asked Caroline to design a logo that could be placed on the side of a shoe. She handed him the SWOOSH, he handed her $35.00. In spring of 1972, the first shoe with the NIKE SWOOSH was introduced.....the rest is history!

Grammar Post

Finding subjects and verbs, sometimes this can be difficult and there is a rule that I found that states;

If a verb follows to, it is called an infinitive phrase and is not the main verb. You will find the main verb either before or after the infinitive phrase.
Examples: I like to walk.
The efforts to get her elected succeeded.
This is just one of the rules there are many more at this great site;
